UD OLLI Online

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions

About UD OLLI Online Classes

I take classes at OLLI Wilmington. Can I take a class taught by an OLLI Kent/ Sussex instructor? (and vice versa)

Classes can be taken by anyone regardless of their “home” OLLI program. UD OLLI Online is a collaboration of instructors and volunteers from across Delaware and the immediate area. New members are also welcome — you do not need to be a prior OLLI participant.

What times are the classes offered?  What days?

Class meeting times are 9-10:15 a.m., 10:30-11:45 a.m.,12:30-1:45 p.m., 2-3:15 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. (some classes do have extended times and are indicated in the catalog listing). Extracurricular activities generally occur 3:20 – 4:20 p.m daily.

Will I be able to ask questions of the instructor?

Yes, depending on class size and format, questions can be asked to the instructor via Zoom chat function or by raising your hand.

Will the classes be recorded so I can watch them later if needed?

Due to privacy and intellectual property considerations, classes may not be recorded by OLLI students. In consultation with instructors, selected classes may be recorded by UD OLLI Online for inclusion in our online learning library. Classes that will be recorded will be noted as such in the course listing and students will be notified daily of recording procedures.

Will closed-captioning be available?

Closed captioning can be made available on an as-needed basis. Please indicate your need for this, or other accommodations on your online registration form.

Registration

I’m not comfortable inputting my credit card information online. Can I call in to provide my credit card over the phone?

All payments for UD OLLI Online must be submitted through the secure registration website. The University of Delaware uses a secure network for payment processing and your credit card information will be encrypted to ensure maximum security. Our payment system is not equipped to process telephone payments at this time.

Can I register myself and my spouse at the same time, but pay separately with two different credit cards?

Payment must be processed at the time of registration for each registrant.

Why does the class I want to register for say “Not available” when I try to register for it? Are waitlists available for sold out classes?

Some classes have size limits due to instructor requests. Classes with limits are all detailed within each class’ course description. If no limit is stated, the number of seats available is limited to the maximum capacity of a Zoom session (300 seats). However, waitlists are NOW AVAILABLE for sold-out classes!  If a class is listed as “Sold Out” or “Not available”, please scroll down to the bottom of the registration page to find the “I wish to be added to the waitlist” section.  Click on the class that you wish to be wait listed for and complete the registration process.  Please note that no fees for waitlist class(es) will be take at the time of registration and placement on a waitlist does NOT guarantee space within the class.  If space opens up within the class, you will received notification from an OLLI staff member.

How will I know if I got into the classes that I registered for?

You will receive an email immediately after you have completed registration confirming your class registration. Please be sure to check the spam/junk/bulk/promotional folders in your email if you don’t immediately receive it. Please contact us at olli-online@udel.edu if you have not received it.

Why can’t I just mail in my registration as with the on-site OLLI program?

Due to the nature of our new online program, only online registrations can be accepted.

What happens if I want to drop or add a course after registration?

Drop/add will be available for each of the 5-week and 11-week sessions.  Drop/adds are only available on a space permitting basis and only during the allotted time period.

I want to register but am not sure about how to navigate the system.  How can I get help?

Please email olli-online@udel.edu  We would be glad to help you!

I lost connection during the registration process and my cart is now empty.  How do I get those courses back?

We are so sorry that you experienced technical difficulties. Unfortunately, the registration site doesn’t retain the course information during a lost connection. Please re-enter and submit your course selection and payment. If you were in the payment process and lost connection, please contact us at olli-online@udel.edu to confirm whether we received your payment before re-entering your registration.

The registration form is “grayed out” on my iPad. What am I doing wrong? (OR, I see a “pink error box” on the registration form and it’s preventing me from registering.)

Please email us at olli-online@udel.edu and let us know about this. We will work with IT, rectify this issue and notify you when complete.

I really wanted to take a particular course, but the system says it is full. The instructor told me that I could get in.  How do I register for it?

We’re very sorry, but no exceptions can be made at this time. If the registration system says that a course is full, there are absolutely no spots available. Seats are not transferable between members.

I am unavailable at the exact time when OLLI’s first-come, first-served registration opens. Can’t you just register me over the phone or by email?

At this time, registrations can only be processed via our online registration system.  If you are having trouble registering, please email olli-online@udel.edu and we would be glad to help walk you through the process.

I want to take a class with my friend.  How do I make sure both of us get into the class?

Class registrations are offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Please arrange to register at approximately the same time to ensure acceptance into the class due to space limitations in some classes. No guarantees!

Technology & Online Class Format

What do the technological requirements mean in the course listing?

Courses that have the laptop/desktop screen designation include visuals that will show to best advantage on a larger screen. This is not to say that members can’t register for one of those classes with an iPad or smartphone; they just need to be aware that they may not get the most benefit from the visuals. Courses that have any screen designation are appropriate for any screen viewing (smartphone, tablet, computer or laptop).

I’m really not comfortable with Zoom, but willing to learn.  How do I sign up for training?

Please sign up for training, and learn more about Zoom, on our UD OLLI Online Zoom support page.

I need an @udel.edu email account.  Who do I contact to get one?

Please email Brian Medina at bmedina@udel.edu to request a UD email account. The only ones who “need” udel email are instructors. Everybody else can use whatever email they have, for the purposes of accessing their courses and receiving their course information.

How will you keep students from interrupting with technical issues?

Registrants will be asked to “enter” the virtual classroom 15 minutes early to ensure connectivity, audio and visuals are working. The time can be spent in conversation with other students, or you can simply turn off your microphone and camera until class starts–your computer will stay connected.

What if my internet is slow or unreliable?

It is recommended that you have high-speed internet access to participate in the courses.

Does it matter which internet provider I use?

You can use any high-speed internet provider to attend Zoom classes.

How much does the software cost for me to participate?

Zoom software is free to users.  Please contact Tim Ward at trward@udel.edu with any questions.

Do I need headphones to participate in class?

Headphones are not necessary as long as your device has a microphone and speakers.

Email issues — “In a jam? Check your spam!”

I didn’t receive a confirmation of my registration in my email inbox. Can you please confirm that you received my registration?

We suggest looking again in your inbox as well as your junk/bulk/promotional email folders. If you still do not see an email confirmation, please email us at olli-online@udel.edu and we will check our registration system.

TECH TIP — How to check your Junk or Spam or Bulk Email or Promotions email folder — There are many names for the “junk” folder where your Internet Service Provider may be diverting and/or deleting emails that are being mis-categorized as “spam” (unsolicited and unwanted junk email sent out in bulk to an indiscriminate recipient list). This may be dependent on your own email settings, as well as the settings of your email provider (Comcast, Verizon, AOL, Yahoo, Gmail, etc.). Learn more:

I didn’t receive an automatic message to confirm my registration. Am I registered?

If you did not receive an automatic confirmation or an email registration confirmation, you likely did not complete the registration process. In order for your registration to process, you must provide payment and hit “submit.” If you believe you have done those things, please email us at olli-online@udel.edu and we will check our registration system.

Is My Computer/Phone/Tablet Compatible?

I don’t have a computer or a laptop, only an iPhone.  Can I still register for courses?

An iPhone does not count as a laptop, because its functionality is limited in the Zoom environment. Courses that have the laptop/desktop screen designation include visuals that will show to best advantage on a larger screen. This is not to say that members can’t register for one of those classes with an iPad or smartphone; they just need to be aware that they may not get the most benefit from the visuals.

I have an iPad.  Can I take the courses that say “computer or laptop screen” for optimal viewing?

An iPad does not count as a laptop, because its functionality is limited in the Zoom environment. Courses that have the laptop/desktop screen designation include visuals that will show to best advantage on a larger screen. This is not to say that members can’t register for one of those classes with an iPad or smartphone; they just need to be aware that they may not get the most benefit from the visuals.

My computer doesn’t have a webcam, but I do have audio capabilities.  Can I still register for courses?

It’s okay if no one can see you, but you must be able to see the instructor – so no landline phone-in, but a smartphone with a screen is okay. This is not to say that members can’t register for one of those classes with these capabilities; they just need to be aware that they may not get the most benefit from the visuals.

How do I know what kind of computer I have?

Please contact either Tim Ward at trward@udel.edu or Brian Medina at bmedina@udel.edu and they can assist you.

What does course format mean in the course listing?

  • “Discussion” courses will have time built in for interaction with instructor and other members.
  • “Lecture” courses are not interactive, but may provide time for questions at some point in the class.
  • “Active” means you will be doing or creating something in class.

Payment and Refunds

I want to register for courses, but I can’t pay until the end of the month.  Can’t I just register now and then give you credit card information later?

Payment is due at the time of registration.

Do you offer scholarships for online program?

Partial scholarships are available for spring. Please send an email to jbero@udel.edu and include the word “scholarship” in your subject line and we will send you a brief form to complete. Applications for scholarships are kept private. The UD OLLI program is proud to have funds available to make the program as accessible as possible.

How many UD OLLI Online classes can I take in the spring? What are the fees?

You may take as many classes as you like, but we remind you that online classes can be tiring. Consider your weekly schedule and avoid back-to-back classes if you can. The UD OLLI Online spring membership fee is $75 and each 5-week class is an additional charge of $25. Each 11-week class is an additional charge of $50. Classes offered in partnership with local organizations may have a higher fee. Extracurricular activities, social events and lectures are included in membership.
