Explore South Asia — India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Nepal — through five stories that still shape public life: caste; religion and communal conflict; the Mughal Empire, which ruled much of the subcontinent before British power; British colonial rule; and the struggle for independence, Partition, and democracy. No background required.

The mother tongue of all Romance languages, Latin is very different from English in syntax and grammar. We will explore the beauty of declensions and conjugations and allow for translations along with enhancing English vocabulary derivatives of Latin. This course covers both the beginner and intermediate level, with all welcome to learn and build language skills. Required text: Wheelock’s Latin, 7th ed., by Wheelock and LaFleur, 978 0061997228.

What is important in nutrition after 50? How are nutrition recommendations developed? In this course we discuss nutrition in food and drinks (RDA, DV, AI), nutrition labels and online analyses, carbohydrates and proteins, evidence-based diets, the Blue Zones phenomenon, nutrition and longevity, and the microbiome and probiotics.

Each session explores one common medical term and its origin, meaning, history and impact on a person’s health. As a result, members should be better informed about the vocabulary and disease processes they may hear from their healthcare professional, the media or online and be better able to distinguish between evidence-based information and misinformation, and empowered to take charge of their own health with safer and wiser decisions.
