Required text: The Frozen River by Ariel Lawhon, ISBN 978-0-593-31207-0. The Frozen River is a historical novel set in the rural town of Hallowell, Maine, in 1789. It is based on the actual written diaries of midwife and healer Martha Ballard. It is part murder mystery and part study of women’s place in post-colonial American society. Best of all, it is a really good read, and the discussions will be lively. When registering, sign up for the section meeting Thursdays, 9 a.m. in Dover; or Wednesdays, 12:45 p.m. online.

This offering meets for a total of 5 session(s).
