The primary objective of the Basic Sign Language class (typically ASL 101) is to establish fundamental communicative competence, enabling learners to engage in basic conversations, understand Deaf culture, and use essential vocabulary and grammar. Key goals include learning up to sign 50 to 100 or more words, fingerspelling, and using facial expressions for non-verbal, visual communication.

INSTRUCTOR: Kathleen Berault-Chmielewski

BERAULT-CHMIELEWSKI, KATHLEEN — Resident of Lewes with over 30 years teaching in public service. B.S., University of Maryland; M.A., Gallaudet University. Worked at Gallaudet for 11 years in research and residential life. Interpreted at public and private events. Love the water, gardening and donuts, not necessarily in that order.
