LIFE ASCENDING: GREAT INVENTIONS OF EVOLUTION (P278)

P – Life Sciences

Graphic of Delaware with New Castle County Highlighted

Wilmington (Arsht Hall) | February 2, 2026-May 4, 2026

Monday: 12:45 PM-2:00 PM

Required text: Life Ascending: The Ten Great Inventions of Evolutions, Nick Lane, ISBN 978-0-393-33866-9. Will we find life on Mars? Or elsewhere in the Universe? Why does sex exist? Why do we die? These are all great questions for discussion. Our answers today are incomplete but also quite sophisticated. Nick Lane’s book is to be our guide. Background in science helps but is not necessary; Nick Lane is a good story teller and the collective backgrounds of class members are a rich resource.

This offering meets for a total of 13 session(s).

INSTRUCTOR: Robert Ketcham

KETCHAM, ROBERT — The most satisfying part of my time teaching in UD’s Biology Department was creating laboratories for non-science majors. The big ideas in biology have advanced dramatically in my (our) lifetime(s). I like to keep up with those ideas, through reading and discussion. (P278)
