Required text: A Field Guide to Bluegrass Music, Jeff Westerinen, online resource (https://blueoctanebluegrass.com/a-field-guide-to-bluegrass/). The course is a comprehensive guide to bluegrass music, designed for both musicians and non-musicians. It covers the history, sub-genres and key elements of bluegrass, aiming to provide a foundation for understanding its development and evolution. The course includes live demonstrations of each bluegrass instrument, helping students develop a trained ear for deeper listening (and playing).

INSTRUCTORS: Andrea Westerinen, Jeff Westerinen

WESTERINEN, ANDREA — B.S., physics and mathematics, Marquette University; M.S., computer science, Nova Southeastern University. Software engineer and systems architect, with 40+ years’ experience. Specialization in natural language processing and knowledge engineering.

WESTERINEN, JEFF — Spent 33 years in the consumer electronics and computer industries, holding leadership roles at IBM, Intel and Microsoft. Currently, CEO of Ontoinsights, LLC, a small startup dedicated to advancing knowledge acquisition and understanding human narratives.
