ENDURING INTERNATIONAL RIVALRIES AND STRATEGIC DECISION MAKING (G571)

G – History

As the global geopolitical order evolves from a single dominant hegemon (the U.S.) to a new polycentric world, the specter of enduring near-peer and regional rivalries challenges U.S. policy makers with new threats and new opportunities. How should the U.S. navigate the rivalry with China or other states? Do historic examples of such contests provide lessons for the future? Do theories of international relations or the principles of war provide guidance for U.S. strategic decision making?
