HISTORY AND TALES OF REHOBOTH CITY (G541)

G – History

Wilmington (Arsht Hall) | June 23, 2026-July 21, 2026

Tuesday: 12:45 PM-2:00 PM

This is a hybrid course. One section meets on site at the location listed; and one section meets online only.

Step back into the salt-sprayed air of the late 19th century to discover Rehoboth City and its “pioneer” Captain Lewis Tredenick. This lecture series explores the origins of the town that became Dewey Beach, centered on the man who opened the area’s first hotel and transformed a rugged frontier into a year-round destination. From summer sun-seekers to winter sportsmen, Tredenick welcomed the first travelers to this unique stretch of coast. No sunblock required, just a curiosity for the “way of life” that started it all.

This offering meets for a total of 5 session(s).

INSTRUCTOR: Sarah Dougherty

DOUGHERTY, SARAH — Appointment as historian for the Town of Dewey Beach, January 2016 to present. Particular interest in the early history of Dewey Beach, Delaware, before it was named such. (G541)
