G – History

This is a hybrid course. One section meets on site at the location listed; and one section meets online only.

This class presents an overview of the history and evolution of the passenger’s experience while traveling by rail, sea and air from the early 20th century until today. We discuss how technology, world events and social change impacted travel patterns. The class examines life on board each mode of travel, focusing on speed, passenger accommodations and service. Historic video clips supplement the lecture material.

POWDERLY, THOMAS — Native New Yorker, B.S., Niagara University, M.S., The New School for Social Research. With a long career in the travel industry, he is a circumnavigator, travel centurion and theatre enthusiast. He has lectured on land and sea for a wide variety of organizations. Member of the OLLI Wilmington Curriculum Committee.
