THE CHRISTIAN RELIGION: ONE OR MANY? (J318)

J – Philosophy and Religion

Should we pray for Christian unity, or is the plurality of different Christian churches and sects something that should be celebrated? Readings will be provided, excerpted from William James’ The Varieties of Religious Experience (1902) and Ronald Knox’s Enthusiasm (1950). Lecture and discussion format. Focus of class will be on the tension between authority and personal religious experience.
