CP – Performing Arts Participation

Tuesday: 9:00 AM-10:15 AM

Prerequisite: Intermediate Strings or Violin 2 or equivalent. Required text: Please obtain Essential Elements for Strings Book 3 (2025 Edition), Robert Gillespie et al. relevant for your instrument (Violin ISBN 9798350137088, Viola ISBN 9798350137095, Cello ISBN 9798350137101, String Bass ISBN 9798350137118). Intermediate Strings 3 is course designed for players of orchestral string instruments who are proficient in playing in first position, but wish to increase their expertise in shifting, vibrato, and the various bowing articulations: spiccato, martele, ricochet, etc., and playing in all keys, major and minor. This is not a performing group, it is a class, and students are not asked to “solo” in class. Prospective students are encouraged to email the instructor with questions.

INSTRUCTORS: Carl Van Valkenburg, Eleanor Dooley, Richard Wellons

VAN VALKENBURG, CARL — After retiring in 2016 from a 44-year career as a public school orchestra director, moved to Delaware with wife, Jane, to be closer to family. Plays violin and viola in various Delaware music ensembles. Holds bachelor and master of music degrees from University of Michigan.

DOOLEY, ELEANOR — B.S., pharmacy, University of Texas. Plays with Brandywine Pops Orchestra and the OLLI string ensemble as a founding member. Enjoys gardening and volunteer work, especially with children.

WELLONS, RICHARD — B.A., biology, Westminster College. Studied violin with Mario Mantini in Boston. Plays in amateur symphonies and musical productions. Art interests include drawing, watercolor, acrylic painting and working with metal and wood.
