NOVELS BY THE LOST GENERATION, 1920-1944 (H372)

Required texts: The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas by Gertrude Stein; The Sun Also Rises, Ernest Hemingway; Nightwood, Djuna Barnes; Manhattan Transfer, John Dos Passos. We investigate the “lost generation,” a term penned to describe a generation born after 1890 and writing between the two world wars. This generation of writers faced the displacement and cruelties of war, creating a loss of purpose and direction which their writings attempted to define and illustrate. Settled in Paris, the emigre writers were selected by literary critics as most creative and instrumental in building new literary forms for narrative.
