This course will be an overview of human rights and the American experience. We will look at the philosophical underpinnings and history of human rights in America, tracing their development from The Enlightenment to today. By exploring key historical documents, landmark court cases, and human rights issues, we will gain a deeper understanding of human rights-what are they? who has them? And why are they important?

INSTRUCTOR: Bonnie Tamres-Moore

TAMRES-MOORE, BONNIE — Bonnie Tamres-Moore is a long-time human rights activist who for over 25 years has developed national projects, and continues to teach, speak and act, upholding human rights. She is a founding member of the National Religious Campaign Against Torture and a cofounder of Interfaith Action for Human Rights, both based in Washington, DC, and the founder of Coats for Canines, a nonprofit providing for the needs of pets of the homeless community in Austin, Texas. She is a creator of innovative projects addressing torture, bigotry and human rights abuse, an educator and public speaker. She is currently the director of the “hate has no home” initiative for Speak Out Against Hate in Delaware.
