VIKING AGE EXPLORERS & TRADERS (G565)

G – History

Between the 8th and 11th centuries, the Vikings sailed from their native Scandinavian lands to maraud along the coasts of western Europe and the inland river routes of eastern Europe. Feared as formidable warriors, the Norsemen were also farmers, settlers and traders. This course traces the ancient history of the Vikings and their rise to power, with a special focus on their trading activities in the Byzantine Empire and along the Silk Road.

GUTTERIDGE, MARGARET — Native of Scotland, educated in the United Kingdom, graduated with a B.A. and teaching diploma. Taught in England and Scotland for several years. Curatorial assistant and tour guide for almost twenty years at Winterthur Museum, Garden and Library.
