STRING INSTRUCTION: INTERMEDIATE I (CP305)

CP – Performing Arts Participation

Prerequisite: Beginning Strings 2 or equivalent. Required text: Please obtain Essential Elements for Strings Book 2 (2025 Edition), Robert Gillespie et al. for your relevant instrument (Violin ISBN 9798350136555, Viola ISBN 9798350136579, Cello ISBN 9798350136593, String Bass ISBN 9798350136609). Intermediate Strings 1 is a course designed for players of orchestral string instruments who would feel comfortable playing any piece in the Essential Elements for Strings Book 1 and are ready for the additional challenges Book 2. This is not a performing group, it is a class, and students are not asked to “solo” in class. The Essential Elements books are available for browsing at various music stores in the area, or prospective students can email the instructor for examples.

INSTRUCTORS: Carl Van Valkenburg, Eleanor Dooley, Richard Wellons

VAN VALKENBURG, CARL — After retiring in 2016 from a 44-year career as a public school orchestra director, moved to Delaware with wife, Jane, to be closer to family. Plays violin and viola in various Delaware music ensembles. Holds bachelor and master of music degrees from University of Michigan.

DOOLEY, ELEANOR — B.S., pharmacy, University of Texas. Plays with Brandywine Pops Orchestra and the OLLI string ensemble as a founding member. Enjoys gardening and volunteer work, especially with children.

WELLONS, RICHARD — B.A., biology, Westminster College. Studied violin with Mario Mantini in Boston. Plays in amateur symphonies and musical productions. Art interests include drawing, watercolor, acrylic painting and working with metal and wood.
